The Peak District specialist
Roofing for England’s Highest Market Town
Buxton is the highest market town in England, and its roofs have the hardest job of any we work on. Snow that settles, frosts that bite into mortar, and wind driven rain coming across the moors will find any weakness in a roof, which is why roofing here is not quite the same trade as roofing in a sheltered suburb. TRS Roofing & Guttering is a family run firm with more than 20 years in the trade, and we have been repairing, re-slating and replacing roofs in Buxton and across the Peak District for years.
OUR WORK
Before and After: Roofing Work by TRS
SLATE WORK DONE PROPERLY
Slate Roof Repairs and Re-Slating in Buxton
Much of Buxton is roofed in slate, and slate deserves a roofer who works with it regularly. After a storm the common calls are slipped and cracked slates, broken ridge pieces and lifted flashings, particularly on exposed gables. We refix and replace slates individually where the roof is otherwise sound, matching the originals as closely as possible in colour, size and thickness so the repair disappears into the roof rather than announcing itself.
Where a slate roof has reached the stage of letting go a few slates every winter, re-slating a slope or the whole roof is often the better answer. We strip the covering, inspect the timbers and felt beneath, and re-slate using sound reclaimed slates or well matched new ones, refitting ridges and valleys properly as we go.
On exposed roofs we also fit mechanically fixed dry ridge systems, which hold the ridge down in high winds without relying on mortar that Buxton frosts work loose.
WINTER CLIMATE GUIDE
What Buxton Winters Do to a Roof
Buxton sits around 300 metres above sea level, and winter arrives here earlier and stays later than it does in the towns below. Three things do most of the damage:
Water gets into hairline cracks in slates, tiles and mortar, freezes, expands and opens them a little further each cycle. What starts as a hairline in November can be a leak by March.
Snow sitting on a roof finds weaknesses that rain runs straight past, and melting snow backs up behind blocked gutters and under low pitches.
Rain in Buxton often arrives sideways. It gets under lifted slates, around tired flashings and into ridge lines that would stay dry in calmer places.
A roof check in autumn, gutters cleared before the leaves finish falling, and a quick look after any named storm. Sound fascias and soffits matter more here than most places too, because they carry the guttering that has to cope with moorland rainfall and snowmelt.

STONE BUILT HOMES
Working on Buxton’s Older Stone Properties
A good part of Buxton’s housing is solid stone, from Victorian terraces to detached villas, and the roofs on these buildings need a sympathetic approach. Traditional timber structures, stone gables, original chimneys and older detailing all have to be respected rather than modernised away. We work carefully on older properties, using materials that suit the building, keeping original features where they are sound, and explaining honestly where something genuinely needs renewing rather than repairing.
WHEN REPAIR IS NO LONGER SENSIBLE
Full Roof Replacements in Buxton
When a roof is past sensible repair, we carry out complete replacements on pitched and flat roofs across Buxton. The job starts with a survey and a written quotation, with the options explained in plain terms: slate against tile, breathable membranes, insulation upgrades while the roof is open, and ridge and verge details that will actually stay put in Buxton weather. The old covering comes off, any timber problems are dealt with while everything is exposed, and the new roof goes on to a standard chosen for the climate it has to live in, not just the day it is fitted.
COVERAGE
Covering Buxton from Our Wigan Base
TRS is based in Wigan, and Buxton is one of the furthest towns we serve. That distance is managed with proper planning rather than left to chance. Peak District visits are scheduled in advance, appointment windows are realistic and agreed at the time of booking, and once a job begins it is completed rather than left part finished between trips. We have carried out roofing work across the Peak District for years, including Bakewell and Matlock, and repeat business from those areas reflects how well the arrangement works. Every town we serve is listed on our areas we cover page.

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED
Roofers Buxton FAQs
Do you really cover Buxton from Wigan?
Can you match the slate on my roof?
In most cases, yes. We source reclaimed or new slates to match the colour, size and thickness of the originals, which matters on Buxton's older terraces and stone properties where a mismatched patch stands out from the street.
My roof was damaged by snow or a storm. Can you help with the insurance side?
We can make the roof watertight quickly, then provide the written quotation and photographs of the damage that insurers typically ask for with a claim. Your insurer handles the claim itself, but you will have proper documentation of what was damaged and what it costs to put right.
Do you work on older stone properties?
Yes. A large part of our Buxton work is on stone built homes with traditional roof structures. We use sympathetic materials, keep original details where they are sound, and explain clearly when something genuinely needs renewing.
How quickly can you take on a Buxton job?
Urgent leaks and storm damage are prioritised, and we will always tell you honestly when we can be there rather than guessing. Routine repairs and quotations are booked into planned Peak District visits, so you get a firm window rather than a vague promise. Call 0800 956 7199 and we will give you a date.
